The Eagles sue owners of Hotel California in Mexico
The hotel's website suggests its "hazy" history has led to legends surrounding its affiliation with the 1970s rock band.
The Eagles have filed a lawsuit against the owners of a Mexico hotel, accusing them of using the name of their hit song without permission.
The family-owned Todos Santos hotel in Mexico's Baja California Sur region describes itself as a source of "numerous stories" surrounding its connection with the rock band.
"Whether fact or fiction, nobody knows for sure," the website reads.
In a complaint filed on Monday, the members of the 1970s group said the owners of the hotel were "actively encouraging" their guests to believe the establishment is related to the band.
The Eagles say unofficial band merchandise has been sold at the hotel, including using the song itself inside the hotel lobby and selling T-shirts which refer to it as "legendary".
"During the 1960s and 1970s, the precise details of the hotel's history are a bit hazy," the hotel's website reads.
"Although the present owners of the hotel do not have any affiliation with the Eagles, nor do they promote any association, many visitors are mesmerised by the 'coincidences' between the lyrics of the hit song and the physicality of the hotel and its surroundings," it adds.
The website then lists a series of so-called "coincidences", which relate the hotel to the song, like the "long desert highway" that leads there and the "countless stories relating to spirits and ghosts in the courtyard".
Hotel California is the title track from the 1976 Eagles album of the same name. It won the 1977 Grammy Award for record of the year and is widely considered the band's most famous song.
It is known for its long guitar outro featuring Don Felder and Joe Walsh, and complex lyrics sung by Don Henley.
"Defendants lead US consumers to believe that the Todos Santos Hotel is associated with the Eagles and, among other things, served as the inspiration for the lyrics in Hotel California, which is false," the complaint said.
The hotel website says it was bought in 2001 by a Canadian couple, who renovated the building "which would later win numerous awards for design and decor".
On website Trip Advisor, customer reviews say "Hotel California in Todos Santos is the original named in the 1970's song by the Eagles".
"It has put this otherwise sleepy little Baja town on the map for tourism," one review says.
